This is a jellyfish loosely based on a few real species, but mostly served as an experiment in rendering the translucent bodies of jellyfish.

This is a somewhat fanciful rendering of a cuttlefish, who can express their emotions  through color change by selectively opening and closing special pores on their skin.

Found throughout the world, I first encountered these very tiny and very cute sea creatures in an aquarium display in Mie, Japan.

SEA GOOSEBERRY, 2016 Acrylic on canvas, 4″x4″ A very interesting-looking relative of the equally harmless comb jelly.

When I lived in Massachusetts, these perfectly harmless comb jellyfish were a common sight in the waters near my home. Although so clear as to be almost invisible in daylight, the light reflecting off of their cilia made ever-changing rainbow patterns.
