OINARISAN NO KITSUNE, 2011

Watercolor, 8″ x 10″

The Japanese Shinto god Inari has shrines dedicated to him all around Japan: from miniature torii near the corner of a building to the famous Fushimi Inari Taisha. Many will have statues of his messengers, foxes. They are often shown with either a jewel or a key in their mouths. This well-weathered one (with a jewel) was painted in the Higashiyama area of Kyoto.
